If I Hadn’t Given My Life to Christ, I’d be a Bad Guy – Pastor Wilson Bugembe

Renowned city pastor and gospel musician Wilson Bugembe has opened up about his troubled past, revealing that if he hadn’t dedicated his life to Christ, he likely would have ended up as a criminal.

Speaking during a heartfelt television interview, Pastor Bugembe reflected on his painful childhood, losing his parents and siblings, sleeping on the streets, and surviving severe hunger between the ages of 13 and 14. He explained that although many children in similar situations are driven into crime, he consciously avoided illegal activities to honor the memory of his lost family.

“I went through a lot. I was on the streets for survival. But I kept thinking about my relatives back home and how I would disappoint them if I became a thief,” he shared.

Bugembe candidly admitted that had he not been born again, his story might have taken a very different turn.

“I would be different. Why do you think it was easy for me to be friends with all the bad guys in town? People who grew up in affluent backgrounds often struggle to do that. That’s why pastors first doubted me in the beginning,” he explained.

Bugembe’s background has earned him admiration, especially among **young people and celebrities, many of whom find him relatable and approachable. His ability to connect with both secular artists and troubled youths has positioned him as one of the most inclusive and nonjudgmental spiritual leaders in Uganda.

“Because of my background, I understand them. They feel free around me and even share their darkest secrets, knowing I won’t judge them,” he said.

This connection with Uganda’s entertainment world led Pastor Bugembe to introduce Celebrity Sundays, special church services where public figures are invited to worship and pray alongside their fans. The initiative has attracted both praise and criticism, particularly from some religious leaders who accuse him of inviting waywardness into the house of God.

“If I’m around all these artists, I will be a part of them. I understand them because I went through it. Most of these celebrities live a double life. They act one way in public, but off stage, they live a different reality,” he noted.

The pastor hinted that he knows many untold stories about Ugandan celebrities stories he would only reveal with their permission.
