The long-simmering tension between music promoters and the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) has reached new heights after veteran promoter Abitex publicly banned Eddy Kenzo and other artistes affiliated with the federation.
During a fiery session on Bruno K’s popular Ekiboozi on TikTok, Abitex didn’t hold back, branding the Grammy-nominated singer the most selfish artiste in the industry.
“Eddy Kenzo is selfish. His costs are very high, and even when he brings people to shows, the promoter leaves with nothing because of his high demands. People see a successful event due to the numbers who come to see him perform, but the promoter leaves in pain and tears,” Abitex said
According to Abitex, Kenzo’s high booking fees and inflexible terms make it nearly impossible for promoters to benefit financially, even when shows pull large crowds. He further accused Kenzo and his manager, Martin Beta, of using the Uganda National Musicians Federation as their own personal business venture.
The comments have added fuel to the ongoing friction between independent promoters and the leadership of the UNMF, an organization that has faced criticism for allegedly sidelining stakeholders in the industry’s financial and structural decisions.
Abitex also vowed to continue pushing for transparency around the UGX 30 billion the government recently allocated to the UNMF, stating that promoters deserve a share of the funds.
“We are going to engage stakeholders until promoters receive part of that money. The federation is not just for a few individuals.”
