Media personality Ssenga Justine Nantume has shared a deeply personal story about surviving abuse at the hands of an ex-lover. Speaking on a YouTube podcast alongside fellow presenters Bina Babie and Doreen, Nantume revealed how a toxic and promiscuous partner once assaulted her in public.
According to Nantume, the incident happened at a popular bar where she had gone with her then-partner. She recalled asking him to take her home, only to find him inside her car with another woman. Choosing to remain respectful, she knelt and greeted everyone around, a gesture that unexpectedly triggered her partner’s anger.
“He was in my car with another woman. When I greeted them, he stepped out of the car and started slapping me in public, even disorganizing the clothes I was wearing,” she recounted.
Despite the humiliation, Nantume expressed gratitude to the revelers present, saying they protected her dignity by not recording the incident. “I thank people who were around the bar because they didn’t record video clips to post me on social media. I just got on a boda and left. His friends even confronted him for beating me up,” she noted.
The experience became a turning point in her life. Nantume said she walked away from the relationship, prayed for strength, and eventually cut all ties with her abuser. With her brother’s help, she repossessed her car and later bought a new one. Despite repeated calls from the ex-lover begging for forgiveness, she has never responded.
“I cried to God, asking Him to take this man out of my life. And He did. From that day, I decided never to look back,” Nantume said.
Her revelation comes at a time when domestic violence continues to be a pressing issue in Uganda. By sharing her experience, Nantume hopes to encourage others in toxic relationships to prioritize their safety and walk away before it is too late.
