With just weeks to the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), FUFA President Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim has issued a passionate appeal to Ugandans to rally behind the Uganda Cranes as the team intensifies preparations for the prestigious tournament, set to be hosted on home soil.

Magogo made the call while addressing the media shortly after attending the team’s training session on Wednesday morning at Prisons Ground, Luzira. The President expressed optimism about the team’s performance so far, commending both players and coaches for their dedication.

“As the host country for the CHAN competition, it’s my responsibility to ensure our team is well-prepared. I’ve made it a priority to follow up on training sessions, and I’m excited by the coaches’ dedication and the players’ commitment. The energy and attention to detail are impressive, and I’m confident our preparations are on track,” said Magogo.

He further revealed that trial games are in the pipeline to give the team valuable match experience before the tournament kicks off. According to Magogo, the technical team is in continuous engagement with players to better understand their needs and ensure nothing is left to chance.

“We are working on securing friendly matches to give the team valuable practice. Bridging the gap between office planning and on-ground reality is key,” he added.

Magogo emphasized the importance of public support, urging Ugandans to back the team with unwavering passion, regardless of the challenges ahead.

“The team is motivated, committed, and working hard. Now it’s up to Ugandans to support them. These players are our brothers and children. They deserve our love and encouragement. We may face tough competition, but with determination and teamwork, I’m confident we’ll put up a strong performance,” he noted.

Responding to public concerns over player selection, Magogo urged fans to trust the technical decisions being made by the coaching staff. He explained that every decision is grounded in professionalism and the pursuit of victory.

“People often ask why certain players are dropped or why the squad has so many members. But team selection is a technical process, made in the best interest of the team. Even I sometimes question selections as a fan, but I trust the coaches’ expertise and the process in place.”

He called on fans to shift focus from individual players to the collective, encouraging them to support the entire squad rather than dwell on selection debates.

“Some players may be carrying injuries or battling mental challenges we may not see. Instead of second-guessing, let’s rally behind the whole team.”

Magogo also took time to applaud legendary former Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Denis Onyango, who is currently lending his expertise to the national team during his holiday break.

“We’re grateful to Denis Onyango for joining the technical team during his stay. As a former Cranes goalkeeper, his presence and experience are invaluable. He’s working with our goalkeepers and offering crucial insights that we believe will make a big impact.”
