Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament Hon. Betty Nambooze has voiced strong criticism over the recent DNA tests conducted on the children of the late Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, calling the move a violation of Islamic values and the late legislator’s dignity.
The controversy emerged after results revealed that only four out of nine children tested were biologically linked to the deceased MP. The DNA tests, reportedly initiated by Ssegirinya’s personal assistant, Alex Lusswa Luwemba, were part of efforts to establish paternity in relation to inheritance and estate matters following Ssegirinya’s passing.
However, Hon. Nambooze has questioned both the motive and the method, arguing that DNA testing contradicts the principles of Islam, the faith Ssegirinya followed during his life.
“If you claim the children are not of the late Ssegirinya, then you must tell us who their father is,” Nambooze said in a passionate appeal. “Unless another man comes up and says Ssegirinya took their wife, we can listen to that. But I request the responsible people to handle the matters as the late’s religion says – no DNA.”
Nambooze stressed that the late MP’s beliefs should guide the handling of his affairs, particularly matters as sensitive as the legitimacy of his children. She urged those in charge of managing Ssegirinya’s estate to uphold cultural and religious values, warning against actions that could cause further harm to the family and community.
The DNA revelations have sparked mixed reactions from the public, with some defending the tests as necessary for legal clarity, while others, like Nambooze, view them as a disrespectful affront to the memory of the late legislator.
