Edith Katende Mufumbiro, wife of Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, the Deputy Spokesperson for the opposition, has died, plunging family, friends and supporters into mourning.
According to family sources, Edith passed away at about 3:00am on Wednesday after a prolonged battle with cancer.
Her death has been described as a major loss to both her immediate family and the wider community, where she was known for her compassion, resilience and unwavering support for her husband’s political work.
At the time of her death, Mr Mufumbiro remains in detention at Luzira Upper Prison, where he is facing charges linked to his opposition activities. His continued detention during his wife’s illness and eventual passing has drawn criticism from sections of the public.
The news of Edith’s death was confirmed by Robert Kyagulanyi, the president of the National Unity Platform, who expressed sorrow in an official statement.
Kyagulanyi said Edith succumbed to a long illness in the early hours of Wednesday, describing her passing as a significant loss to the party and the community at large.
He also criticised the continued detention of Mr Mufumbiro, noting that he had previously applied for bail to care for his ailing wife, but his requests were denied. Kyagulanyi further stated that on the day of the alleged offence, Mr Mufumbiro was not at the party headquarters but at the Mulago Cancer Institute attending to his wife.
By press time, authorities had not issued any official response to the claims regarding Mr Mufumbiro’s detention or the circumstances surrounding the case.
